A Telegram group moderation bot is an extra admin that works all day, every day. It deletes spam and unwanted links, filters bad words and explicit pictures, slows down people who flood the chat, greets newcomers with your rules, and warns or bans people who keep breaking them. Popular options include Rose (@MissRose_bot), Combot and Group Help, and Telegram itself now has several built-in tools that do part of the job.

This guide covers what Telegram gives you for free, which admin rights a bot needs, how the main bots compare, and how to set one up without removing the wrong messages.

What a Telegram group moderation bot does

Most moderation bots cover the same core jobs:

  • Spam: deletes promotional messages and known spam accounts.
  • Links: removes links or invite links from people who aren't approved.
  • Bad words: deletes messages with words from your list, and warns the sender.
  • Explicit pictures (NSFW): removes images that aren't safe for your group.
  • Flood control: stops one person sending many messages in a row.
  • Welcome and rules: greets new members and shows them the rules.
  • Warnings and bans: gives warnings, then mutes or bans after a limit you set.

Some bots add more: a captcha for new members, logs of what admins did, statistics, or shared ban lists across many groups.

Start with Telegram's built-in tools

Before you add any bot, use what Telegram already gives you. It costs nothing and doesn't need extra admins.

  • Default permissions. Telegram lets you "restrict all members from posting specific kinds of content", or stop them sending messages altogether (Telegram). If most of your spam is links, turning off links for members deals with it at the source.
  • Slow mode. Telegram's own flood control. Members can send only "one message per the interval" you choose, and the switch is in your group's permissions (Telegram).
  • Aggressive anti-spam. In large groups, admins can turn on Telegram's stronger spam filter. When Telegram launched it, the option was for groups with more than 200 members. If it removes a real message, you can report the mistake from the Recent Actions tab (Telegram).
  • Welcome messages. Since August 2026, groups and channels can have a welcome message that only new members see. Open the group's profile and select Edit > Welcome Message. No bot needed (Telegram).
  • Guardians for join requests. Since June 2026, you can add bots as admins to handle join requests and screen people before they get in (Telegram).
  • Recent Actions. The admin log shows who deleted, banned or changed what.

For a small, quiet group, this may be all you need. A bot helps once spam gets past these tools, or when you want word filters, warnings and NSFW checks.

Which admin rights a moderation bot needs

A bot can only moderate if you make it an admin. Bots added as admins also see every message. Other bots run in privacy mode by default and only see commands and replies meant for them (Telegram).

Give the bot the rights it needs and nothing more. The labels differ a little between Telegram apps:

Right in the app What the bot uses it for
Delete Messages of Others Removing spam, links, bad words and NSFW pictures
Ban Users Muting, restricting and banning (Telegram)
Invite Users via Link Handling join requests, if the bot screens newcomers
Pin Messages Pinning the rules, if the bot does that

A moderation bot rarely needs Add New Admins or Change Group Info. Leave those off.

Best Telegram group bots for moderation, compared

Features below are taken from each tool's own site or bot profile, as of October 2026.

Combot Captcha, welcome messages, spam filters, warnings and bans, CAS anti-spam, analytics Groups that also want statistics

Group Guard (PowerTeleBot) Spam, bad words, NSFW pictures, flood control, welcome with rules Creators who want the bot set up for them

Rose

Rose (@MissRose_bot) describes itself in its Telegram profile as a "powerful group mod bot". Its documentation covers antiflood, anti-raid, blocklists, captcha, warnings, welcomes and goodbyes, filters, notes, locks, approvals and admin log channels (Rose). Its standout feature is federations: "a collection of banned users", where "any bans in that federation also become applied to your group" (Rose). You set Rose up with commands in the chat, as its docs describe, so it suits admins who are happy to learn them. Rose's own guide warns to add only @MissRose_bot, because other bots copy the name.

Combot

Combot (@combot) covers moderation, analytics and anti-spam for groups and channels. Its site lists "captcha, welcome messages, spam filters, warnings and bans, member reports, admin commands". Its CAS anti-spam bans known spammers "the moment they join a CAS-secured group, before they post anything". Combot says core moderation "is free for groups of any size", with paid plans for more analytics and advanced features (Combot).

Group Help

Group Help (@GroupHelpBot) lists join protection with captcha, anti-spam for "spam, unwanted links, and repeated promotional messages", anti-flood, anti-porn, banned words with a response you choose, and a night mode that quiets the group at set hours. You can also create a free clone of the bot with your own name and profile picture (Group Help).

Group Guard by PowerTeleBot: a Rose alternative

PowerTeleBot is a Telegram mini app that creates bots for creators. Its ready-made Group Guard keeps a group clear of spam, bad words, NSFW pictures and flooding. It welcomes newcomers with your rules and works in the background every day. If you've used Rose, it will feel familiar.

The difference is how you set it up. You describe what you need in plain words, fill in a few fields, and Power creates the bot for you, with its own name and profile photo. You try it privately, free for 3 days, and going live needs a plan. Before you add it, Power shows you exactly what the bot can and can't do.

Be clear about what you need, though. If you run many groups and want federated bans shared across all of them, Rose is built for that, and Group Guard isn't the tool to pick.

Telegram bots list for groups, by job

If you're building a toolkit for your group, here's a short list by job:

  • Moderation: Rose, Combot, Group Help, Group Guard.
  • Statistics: Combot tracks messages, members, joins and leaves (Combot).
  • Giveaways: Telegram's own giveaways, or a picker bot such as TgDraw. See our guide to a Telegram giveaway bot.
  • Anonymous questions: Combot lets members post anonymous questions to the chat (Combot), and PowerTeleBot's Anonymous Inbox collects questions and feedback without showing who's asking.

Use one moderation bot per group. Two bots with the same job will both reply to newcomers and both try to delete the same message.

Setup checklist for a moderation bot

  1. Write your rules. Short and specific: what's not allowed, and what happens if someone breaks a rule.
  2. Set default permissions, such as no links or media for new members if spam is a problem.
  3. Turn on slow mode for busy times, and aggressive anti-spam if your group is large enough to have the option.
  4. Add one moderation bot and make it an admin with only the rights in the table above.
  5. Set the bad-words list in every language your group uses.
  6. Decide on warnings: how many before a mute, and how many before a ban.
  7. Add the welcome message with the rules, from the bot or with Telegram's own welcome message.
  8. Test it with a second account: post a link, a blocked word and several messages in a row.
  9. Tell members how to appeal if the bot removes something by mistake.
  10. Check the logs weekly for the first month.

False positives: when the bot removes the wrong thing

No filter is perfect. Plan for mistakes:

  • Words inside other words. A blocked word can appear inside an innocent one. Test your list and remove words that cause trouble.
  • Other languages. A harmless word in one language can be rude in another, and the other way round.
  • Trusted members' links. If regulars share useful links, approve them, if your bot supports it, instead of turning off the link filter.
  • Pictures. Swimwear, art or medical images can be flagged as explicit. Give admins an easy way to restore them.
  • Telegram's own anti-spam. Report its mistakes from Recent Actions, as Telegram asks (Telegram).

A bot that removes too much is as bad for your group as spam. People stop talking.
